I have a european TV (old CRT, sony Trinitron) apparently it supports only PAL. If I used a digital converter box and use composite video cable will it work? If not how can I make it work with comcast cable?

You can’t. Converter boxes or comcast are all transmitted in NTSC.
You need an NTSC set-top box and then an NTSC-to-PAL converter. You might as well buy a new TV.
