How does TiVo work with digital cable?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

I have Time Warner digital with 2 HD cable/DVR boxes. I hate paying a monthly fee for these. I also have a third TV with no box which only gets the basic 70 or 80 channels. Would TiVo record ALL channels (including those over 100)? If not, would it do so for satellite? I'm looking for a solution that involves a hardware purchase and allows complete DVR-style service (including HD) without rental/DVR fees, if that's possible.
To clarify, I'm under the impression that the cable box itself is what "unlocks" certain premium programming. So, say I buy a TiVo and subscribe, which basically gives me an on-screen program guide and recording capability. Let's say I then call TWC and add some premium channels to my account. Will the TiVo box be able to play those channels??

On a related note, I'm able to find my cable box (which is a hi-def DVR) on eBay. If I simply buy it and hook it up, is it going to work? What can I expect if I do that?

Are dual-coaxial cable jacks still necessary?

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Most cable companies have upgraded their old system of using an A & B box with two sets of coaxial cables to a single coaxial cable system. So would a double jack installed at every tv location in a new house be of any use? When all the tv stations go digital, will the increased bandwith justify the need for two cables once again? Will other new technologies need dual coaxial cables as well (satellite tv, digital cable, fios, etc).

What do you think about Nickelodeon playing some Nick Gas shows?

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

I think it would be cool if Nick Gas would play like four of their shows on Nickelodeon. eg. Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Guts, and Wild and Crazy kids. This would give some more variety to Nick and allow kids that don't have digital cable or satellite to watch these shows.

Will Digital TV require a new antenna besides replacing analog TVs?

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

I'm sure we all know by now that next year, analog TV signals will be outted for digital for home viewing, and that analog TVs will be obsolete without a converter. However, does this also mean that our frequency receiving antennae will also have to be replaced for non-cable/satellite television streams? Thanks in advance for the info.
And yes, North America, I assumed that posting this on the US yahoo parent site would post it to a US audience.
And thanks for the information!

I think this new digital tv transition converter box thing sucks, what say you?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

it is fine if you have cable or satellite or a digital ready tv, but if you just have rabbit ears and an "old" tv it is no good, even if you have the converter box. First of all it has to be clear as a bell weather outside to even get a signal, otherwise it will just be a black screen and say "no signal" or the sound will cut in and out and the screen will get jumbled. And then, since they made that new law where not all stations have to make the transition until July 1 or whatever it is, some stations are still in analog meaning I would have to unhook my antenna from the converter box and hook it back to my tv directly if I want to go to an analog station... all this just to change the channel. At least when they were all analog, you get some kind of signal. I would rather watch a station that is a bit fuzzy than have it cut in and out all the time. But we don't even have the choice anymore...the government forces us to pay more money to buy a box (the coupon didn't cover the whole cost) or get a new tv altogeather and then the result is worse than the original. it's like getting screwed twice.

Anyone know how I can get legally free cable or satellite TV?

Friday, August 27th, 2010

OK, my credit sucks, I owe the only digital cable place in town from like 5 years ago, and my family due to raising costs is barley getting by. So, does anyone know how we can get legally free cable or satellite TV?
Broadcast television may be free, but come next Feb., everyone will have to have either a box or a new TV. We got the 2 boxes we were allowed with the vouchers, but come to find out we now need to purchase a Smart Antenna. Would rather just get cable or satellite TV.

Where can I find a World Cup television schedule for my area in the US.?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I am in Texas, the DFW area. Are any of the basic television channels going to cover the World Cup? What about cable channels? Do you have to have a satellite or digital cable to get the World Cup? What about the ESPN network?
